"University beauty contest sparks ugly row"

Once again, well done to everyone for the brilliant campaign to highlight the inequalities in our system. Yesterday, in class, Elly and I were rudely told - by a man - that we 'should stop telling people what to think': how ironic that a man was telling us what to do, telling us that we should not express our opinion, that we should just shut up and accept the status quo.

Also ironically this was in a class on Feminisms. They ignored us when we were explaining what differences we have with the femininst movements but then continued to lump all the problems with it at our feet, as if we were to blame for the past.

We do not, despite being elected, claim to speak for ALL women; we certainly dont stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Margeret Thatcher or Condeleeza Rice, we

Choice quotes from opponents so far:

"If you don't like being judged by your looks why don't you wear a burkha?" Jonathon Lapagge during meeting on Nov 25th abou Objectification.
"Come on, admit it-women fantasise about being raped don't they?" unknown from Birkbeck bar.
"you should work at a brothel you whore"- kind young man at the QMUL heats...

Hey, good stuff, glad to see it's going well, on a similar note, the editor of the Sun, Rebekah Wade, is coming to my college to speak about journalism (yes journalism and the Sun don't really fit with each other) so we're planning some kind of action to highlight the Sun's views on women.

A few speakers would be great, who have you got in mind? It would be great if I could get someone to speak at our student council about the Miss-Ogynist stuff, we're going to try to win the SU to support a demonstration against Wade, so we need as much help as possible.

Cheers.
