New Spirit in the Fighting Left of Auckland

ALL OUT- FEB 28 2009
There's a new spirit in the fighting Left of Auckland.

Faced with a barrage of attacks from the new National led government, in particular the 90 Day Fire at Will Law (which now comes into effect on March 1st, thanks to pressure from ACT), socialists, unionists and left Greens have got their act together and began planning the fightback.

Socialist Aotearoa organised an inspiring meeting on Thursday 11th December, where Unite union's John Minto and the Green's new MP, Catherine Delahunty, joined SA's Frank Doleman in outlining the need for a united front to resist the effects of the international crisis in capitalism and the new government's attacks on workers and the poor. Leading activists from the Workers Party, Greens on Campus, the National Distribution Union, the Residents Action Movement, the CWG and the CL also spoke from the floor. All agreed that we could work together round the slogan "We won't pay for their Crisis".

Socialist Aotearoa Post Election Debate begins

The NZ Election- Notes to kickstart a Socialist Aotearoa electoral analysis
from Joe C

The mobile's been hopping all day with texts from activists and disillusioned union members- all looking for a post electoral strategy. When the Soft Left was in power, many people saw us socialists as a moral conscience, out fighting the brave fight that might push things a little further to the left- like the $12 an hr minimum wage and youth rates campaign.

But now the Soft Left is in disarray- people are actually looking for some bravery and firm ideas. Who's going to take the battle to Key and Hide? And a lot of rank and file members are calling for a harder fightback than they got from the weak reformist electoral leaders- there is a huge potential anger in a lot of the young Greens, Labour and working class Maori Party voters.
What's going to happen?

Disgraceful New Zealand Tourist Board Ad

Enitiled 'The youngest country on earth', I object to this series of promotional videos on a couple of issues:

1) That NZ/Aotearoa is only dated since the White folk/long pork colonised it is a crock of Eurocentric bullshit.
2) Maori's have lived in Aotearoa for centuries longer than Europeans yet the only Maori or even non-white person in the ad is a woman wearing a facial ta moko (tattoo), perfoming the traditional Maori greeting of touching noses (i can't remember the Maori word for this) and living in the wilderness. A crock of Orientalist bullshit.
3) The scenery is obviously beautiful but these days only rich tourists can afford most of the packaged excursions. There is much more to this beautiful land than mountain climbing and skiing. A crock of (send comments to fill in this blank)__________bullshit.

Wildcat strikes in NZ/Aotearoa-report and pics here now

Cash from Chaos- Casino Crippled!

This weekend, Socialist Aotearoa activists in the Unite Union joined organisers and comrades walking the floor of Auckland's Skycity Casino, calling out random gambling tables on strike in a guerrilla campaign of chaos. Over one thousand Skycity workers are members of Unite, and a further 300 are with the SFWU. The casino at Auckland's heart makes millions of dollars profits every year, and for every winner, generates hundreds of losers, creating misery and poverty for thousands of working class gambling addicts. Its ruthless management cares little about this, and even less for its staff, who it offers the minimum wage.

The chips are down

The hypnotic lights and chimes of the main gambling floor were punctured by the bellow of Unite President, Matt McCarten, who called out random tables on strike, and gave management only minutes to close the table and secure their chips. The guerrilla strikes ensure maximum disruption to management schedules and planning- they never know which game or table will be disrupted, and thus have to hire more workers or keep tables in reserve. The actions are leading to a further campaign of disruption in surveillance, security, catering and entertainment- if there is no cash for workers, then there will be chaos for bosses. And union membership is increasing as a result!

The battle with Skycity management is now on-anyone who wants to volunteer their help or lend their solidarity to the picket lines, please contact Unite Organiser Tom Buckley at 029 4455 703
