The University of London Union needs a President who sticks to their manifesto pledges and defends education for all, unlike the Cleggs and Camerons of this world. I promised a campaigning ULU: you got it, with ULU at the heart of the student protests over cuts and fees.

I’m proud of the role ULU played in helping pull together the biggest student movement for a generation. ULU helped support occupations and demonstrations across the city, becoming a powerful voice for students in London and beyond. That’s a voice we will need over the coming year as education faces exceptionally tough times.

A more relevant, visible ULU means greater student engagement. ULU’s turnover is up, with 11,000 more people through our doors than last year. I’ve organized events and conferences on everything from education to immigration, and widened ULU’s range of cultural activities, along with the NUS Black Students conference.

As promised, I’ve taken steps to improve ULU democracy, establishing the regular London Student Assemblies and ensuring Senate meetings are open to all.

I want to build on this record by pushing ULU harder, improving our services and policies, and ensuring the London Living Wage is implemented here and across university institutions. I will continue to work with and apply pressure on the NUS, working with them where possible and taking a lead where they fail us.

I’m asking for your vote to ensure London students keep their union campaigning.

Me, Maham Ian won the ULU election

Hi all, thank you so much again. Sorry I haven't been able to reply to all of you individually...

The results are as follows:

I was elected as President, Ian Drummond as Vice President and Maham Hashmi as student trustee! Unfortunately our good friend and campaigner Hilary Aked was closely pipped at the post but we are sure that she will continue her hard work.

We would like to thank everyone who helped out in whatever way they did. It all helped to make the campaign a success.

We will have a planning meeting in the next month or so to get started and hit the ground running. There is going to be so much to do.

My election results and results drinks....

Well, as you can imagine we are all exhausted. And it's still not over yet...The lady is about to start singing tho :-)

I have had positive feedback from every campus so if nothing else we have created a good network of activists to build out of.

*Drinks tonight*: 5.30pm ULU, Malet St. The results are due to be announced at 6pm unless there any complaints. I don't know exactly which room but go to the Duck and Dive on 1st and I will put up posters if we move to another room. Please do try to make it and feel free to bring friends!!

Stop the War statement on the crisis in Iran

The crisis unfolding in Iran must not become the pretext for renewed intervention by the USA or Britain in the region, nor for a whipping up of further tension around Iran’s nuclear programme.

The responsibility of the anti-war movement is first of all to oppose the role of the British government in the region, and to prevent its posturing being used as a pretence to justify a US or Israeli military attack against Iran, an attack which would have catastrophic results for the whole Middle East, and the Iranian people first of all.

The Stop the War Coalition believes that resolving the crisis is the right and responsibility of the Iranian people alone, and that external interference can play no positive role – particularly interference by those powers which have laid waste to neighbouring Iraq in a lawless war and occupation, and which unfailingly support Israeli aggression in the region.

It would be wrong for us to take any position on the disputed outcome of the Iranian presidential election. We do, however, support the right to demonstrate peacefully, just as we support the Iranian people’s right to political, trade union and other civil freedoms and to struggle to achieve them. We unequivocally condemn the shooting of protesters and other violations of democratic liberties by the Iranian government.

We note the anger displayed by many Iranians against the British government. These sentiments reflect Britain’s shameful history in the country, from overthrowing the democratic regime of Mossadeq in 1952, to its stalwart support for the Shah’s despotism and its support for Saddam Hussein in his aggression against the Islamic Republic in the 1980s.

This anger can only be exacerbated by British interference in the present crisis. The British government remained silent when its ally Hosni Mubarak falsified election results in Egypt, and it has refused to deal with democratically-elected leaders in the Palestine Authority and in Lebanon. The government supports the Saudi kleptocracy, which does not need to manipulate elections because they are never held there.

The British and US governments wish to see regime change in Iran in order to dominate the Middle East and its resources and leave Israel as the region’s unchallenged military superpower. And a government which ignored millions of its own people marching against its planned war against Iraq is in no position to lecture others on democratic attitudes.

In expressing our solidarity with all the Iranian people striving for a democratic outcome to the crisis in their country, the Coalition will support demonstrations and initiatives which reflect these principles.

The mobile's been hopping all day with texts from activists and disillusioned union members- all looking for a post electoral strategy. When the Soft Left was in power, many people saw us socialists as a moral conscience, out fighting the brave fight that might push things a little further to the left- like the $12 an hr minimum wage and youth rates campaign.

But now the Soft Left is in disarray- people are actually looking for some bravery and firm ideas. Who's going to take the battle to Key and Hide? And a lot of rank and file members are calling for a harder fightback than they got from the weak reformist electoral leaders- there is a huge potential anger in a lot of the young Greens, Labour and working class Maori Party voters.

why (hopefully) the US elections will go like they will. There was a wonderful moment on Newsnight when Paxman, who increasingly represents the most obnoxious face of the British ruling class whimsically pointed out that the war was 'irrelevent' in the US election. He was vociferously contradicted by all Americans on the panel. The reason he was attempting to assert this was because of the elites visceral dislike of any concensus established by popular mobilization. In correctly warning that Obama is not about to change the nature of US capitalism it is absolutely vital that socialists do not resemble the dissolute cynicism of our rulers. You see the erosion of Bush all through Chris Rock's act amongst ordinary people even if he is hardly very radical himself. That erosion has been an excellent thing and the vote tonight is an index of it depth. And that is no bad thing. Hopefully

Me and Nizam Uddin were elected in the first round. Then after eight rounds of preferential vote allocation, Mas Naina got the third position.

Well done mas, shame John and/or ian didn't get in too-we would have had a full slate. I guess it's always hard beating the president (Nizam) who i would have expected to get a much higher vote.

The fascist British National Party are standing in the Leafy ward of Hampstead on September 25th. Having changed tactics from bover boots and skinheads to pinstripe suits they clearly aim to attract the upper, middle classes of this well-to-do area.

Nazi parties such as the BNP usually do well if voter turnout is low so we need to do mass campaigning with as broad a team as possible. Please start spreading the news at every meeting you attend and to all your contacts and I'll keep you updated with campaign meetings.

Unite Against Fascism

On May 1st the BNP won a seat on the London Assembly. We, the SOAS Students' Union, agreed to make Anti-Fascist campaigning one of our priority campaigns for the coming academic year. We booked in a film showing to kick off the campaign and it turns out that the date we have booked is the day before the election in Hampstead. SO, we will do mass leafletting directly afterwards. More details to follow. Please join us to make this as affective as possible.
