Leninism in the 21st century-welcome to Counterfire
Well, now the lack of stuff on this blog is explained...we have all been busy beavering away behind the scenes with a brand new project. More details on how to get involved on the front page-sign up for our weekly bulletin which will provide details of how to register for the sight, how to send in articles, videos, photo's etc.
We look forward to working with you in this brand new way.

The website is being launched on International Women's Day with a 60 strong team including an investigations team, an industrial unit, arts reviews and peer reviewed publications.
Lindsey German, author of Material Girls, Women, Sex and Work and convenor of Stop the War said: “We live in a world of growing conflict, crisis and inequality and Counterfire is a much needed new voice calling for fundamental change.”
Adrian Cousins, editor of the new site, said: “Counterfire includes snappy news articles alongside expert analysis of the most important issues today with original design, photography and video. There is a blog aggregate so those interested in the movements know where to come.”
John Rees, broadcaster and author, said: “The journalism and analysis on Counterfire will provide a welcome alternative to the discredited and failing policies of the political elite.”
Elly Badcock, women's officer at SOAS and women's editor, said: “It's fantastic that on the 100th International Women's Day this powerful new site which uses the latest technology is providing a platform for the new feminism of the 21st Century.”
The site features daily news from the movements including articles on protests, petitions and campaigns alongside theory analysing the economy, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and campaigns against the BNP and the English Defence League.
The site is available at counterfire.org with news being fed through twitter at www.twitter.com/counterfire with a video feed at youtube.com/counterfire. Articles on the site can be reproduced with permission and attribution.

Tansy Hoskins on sexism, war, & awfullness in *that* Rhianna video
New left-wing blog in town, it's Tanzle Town! HERE.
And what a great first article talking about the strange, if not down right perverted, video by Rhianna depicting war, sexism & violence as if it is empowering and something to be proud of.
Well done Tansy, I look forward to many more of your musings.

My problems with this video are threefold. Firstly, this video is pure old fashioned misogyny masquerading as empowerment. The second is that the position of female soldiers has been completely distorted – US State Department figures report that one in three women in the US military will be raped or sexually assaulted by her male counterparts. And the third is that riding around on a colonialist expedition with America’s army does not make you ‘hard’ and that war is not something to be glamorised.
It saddens me to see the route that Rihanna has taken with this video, particularly since she has herself recently been the victim of domestic violence by her former partner. It appears that this video is in part a reaction to that period of her life or at least a reaction to the media circus that sprung up around her since. The fact remains that we live in a world where one in six women are raped and even greater numbers suffer abuse – stopping this should be a priority in the world today but it isn’t. It is no wonder therefore that there is still a market for the false empowerment in this video, that the music industry can tell women that sex is the real way to be respected by men. Unless things change more young women will remain both lost, exploited and unempowered.
“Its not for her specific feminine virtue that gives women a place of honour in human society, but the worth of her useful work accomplished for society, the worth of her personality as a human being, as a creative worker, as citizen, thinker or fighter.” So wrote Alexandra Kollantai almost a hundred years ago. Sadly not much has changed in this respect. Women are still valued primarily for how they look. This is not to say that women can not be fighters. They are. Across the world they play their part in conflicts, fighting and dying along side men. And at the other end of the spectrum they take their place on the sporting field, becoming known for their strength, courage and endurance."

Watch videos of fab ompah band at Philosophy Football
On Friday Tanzle & I went to an event that was pitched to me as 'not unlike your Mutiny event'. It's true, it was a fun, creative, social which had speakers & performers from a variety of backgrounds. Jess Hurd even graced the walls with loads of her lively photos.
Although much older in attendees (I obviously include myself in this category) than Mutiny it was a nice evening at which I bumped into a few people from the circuit including Jess.
Here's what Philosophy Football emailed this morning: the Mindfield gets a special mention. Cheers guys, fiver's in the post! The 2nd video is a great rendition of a song from me youf. Ah ha, ah ha!
"We hope you enjoyed Friday night, and felt it worthwhile braving the near arctic conditions (whatever 'appened to global warming??). As always the gig was packed out, with the event teetering on the anarchic occasionally, but thats the nature of our parties with a purpose.
At Philosophy Football we'd really appreciate your feedback, good, bad or in-between. Email us your comments on the line-up, the venue, the food, whatever, it all helps ensure the next event is even better.
Our ambition is to mix up ideas n entertainment, to contribute towards a culture of dissent that challenges the boxing off of politics from culture and a political practice that appears incapable of recognising the value of pleasure. Big dreams, so did Friday night convince you we might be on to something? Would love to know!
This was our sixth event this year, working with partners including Cuba Solidarity, the Hope not Hate anti-BNP campaign, the TUC and Compass.

How many cops in the BNP?
I had this video entitled 'How many cops in the BBC?' originally-woops. Mind you, we could ask that question too no? I wondered why no one could find it so here it is again with corrected title...better late than never.
This video was filmed at the National Stop the War demo at which two or three shit heads (racists, fascists?) turned up and hurled abuse at Tony Benn calling him unpatriotic and worse (although I didnt hear exactly what was said other than the 'unpatriotic' coz I was a bit to far away to catch it. They refused to move so we chased them away. And, only a couple of days after the BNP leader appeared on Question Time these (and I think I am correct in saying theya re far right racists at least becasue they refused to deny it) they had the damn cheek, and confidence to come to an anti-war a demo of TENS OF THOUSANDS on their own and scream shit at us.
Anyway, this is why we ned to continue our No Platform position. Don't give these people a platform to legitimise thier fascist views.

SOAS Stop the War has started with a bang...
Our first meeting 2 weeks ago attracted about 60 people and this was before lessons had even started. From this we organised a planning meeting followed by elections for the committee.
New people to the group came up with some really great ideas: a T-shirt design competition to all wear together on the demo, setting up a blog, Google groups to assist with organisation, banner AND flag making for the demonstration, doing announcements and flyering at other meetings. We want to make a large lively impact on the day of the demonstration.
Sami and Hamza suggested leafletting the upcoming meeting on Egypt. When we arrived there they also wanted to cover the lecture theatre with flyers which they did. We were a bit nervous about doing this because we didnt know whether we were allowed to or not but they did it anyway!

We didnt realise that the meeting was being hosted by comrades and fellow travellers: Rabab alMahdi from Egypt, Anne Alexander and Phil Marfleet amongst others. We asked if we could make an announcement to which they said 'off course you can, this is a very political meeting'!
Hamza and Sami did a bloody stirling job. Alex Callinicos looked clearly impressed. Things like this just confirm the need for young, fresh, new ideas to keep a group refreshed.

Mutiny's Money on trial looks a treat. Joint the Mutiny, jump aboard.
Mutiny presents Money on Trial on Thursday, September 24.
Karl Marx described money as the “universal pimp”. But the grumpy German philosopher is dead and the Queen’s head is still on the £10 note. Having no money is depressing. Money means food. Money means paying the rent. Money means getting a round in. But even those with stacks of cash spend their whole lives desperately trying to make more. Money perverts everything it touches. So do we need money? Is it a fact of life the same way as water, gravity or syphilis. Can we run the world without it?
Money on Trial is an evening of engaged debate and entertainment.
There will be three main themes..
Music and resistance: Has money destroyed the music business;
Green money: Can the money markets deliver on climate change and
Government and our money: can the government be trusted with our money?
Doors open at 6pm with music and the performances start at 7pm so get there early.
Mutiny has adopted and adapted the Red Room meeting format for a series of events themed Money on Trial, Violence on Trial and Love on Trial. Each event will feature live performances, film showings and music. The performers are invited to a round table discussion with speakers and members of the audience.
Each event begins at 6pm and ends at 11pm starting and finishing with an hour of live music and DJs.
The heart of the meeting will be three sessions of 45 minutes which will feature short films, poems, talks, plays and other performances along with discussion around a central “dinner table” with microphones and questions and statements from the audience.
The first event is titled Money on Trial. The first discussion session will open with an examination of the impact of money on the music industry. We will hear from a new generation of rap artists who have rejected the cliché of drugs, guns, cars and sexism in favour of politically engaged performance. This session will also be examining copyright laws and hope to have a speaker from the appropriately named Pirate Party.
We will then examine Green Capitalism with a short film from director Nick Bloomfield called A Time Comes about the Greenpeace occupation of Kingsnorth; a video on the Vestas occupation and a discussion about whether green investment and legislation can prevent climate change.
Finally, there will be a video performance before a discussion about money and democracy which will look at the issues around MPs expenses, welfare not warfare campaigns and whether the human race actually needs money to exist.
There will be a twitter wall, an exhibition mezzanine and a goody bag of leaflets and information so that everyone can express their creativity, their ideas and their standpoints. We are still open to new ideas to make the event as stimulating and informative as possible.

Netanyahu war criminal protest-more photos & videos soon
Today's protest called at less than 24 hours notice was lively, vibrant and determined. Mutiny TV was there recording protesters, police and general passers-by. Following the murder of Ian Tomlinson by police being caught on camera the police were clearly on their guard although some of them still acted like idiots.
I cant quite work out youtube channel for Mutiny TV but HERE is the link to Elly getting arrested. Originally they tried to charge her with 'unlawful protesting' which didnt hold any weight because we had permission to protest (I KNOW, having to get permission to protest is bad enough). They then charged her with obstructing the highway. She is to appear in court next week. Will keep you posted.
A little later on, after the protest had dispersed, loads of Israeli supporters turned up with Israel flags. The remaining protestors started up again. Anika, who you can see HERE, and her sister were also arrested. Not sure what their status is at the moment. We managed to get them all solicitors immediately.
Ian, who is visiting from China, came along to add his voice to the support for Palestinians. His video will be uploaded soon. As will a great interview with Rabbi Elgahan Beck.

In a scene all-too-familiar to people living under dictatorship, the police choose the early hours of the morning to break down the doors.But what happened this morning didn't take place in North Korea or Burma.It was Irish police who chose to raid the Thomas Cook shop in Dublin at 5 AM today to forcibly remove workers engaged in a peaceful protest.Some 20 workers and officials of their union were taken out one by one, including at least one pregnant woman.According to newspaper reports, the defiant workers clapped and cheered as they were taken out.As one union official put it, this morning's removal of workers from the Thomas Cook store as "a dark stain on the history of industrial relations in Ireland ... These are ordinary working people standing up for their rights. Joe, all I can say is that you are truly a brave an courageous man. You brought me close to tears when you spoke out. You spoke from the heart and we all really appreciate this.
Our hearts and thoughts are with you while you stand up against this war, whilst you fight the powers that be and whilst you fight to get your life back.
Thank you very much from all of us campaigning for an end to this occupation and war.
