Netanyahu war criminal protest-more photos & videos soon

Today's protest called at less than 24 hours notice was lively, vibrant and determined. Mutiny TV was there recording protesters, police and general passers-by. Following the murder of Ian Tomlinson by police being caught on camera the police were clearly on their guard although some of them still acted like idiots.
I cant quite work out youtube channel for Mutiny TV but HERE is the link to Elly getting arrested. Originally they tried to charge her with 'unlawful protesting' which didnt hold any weight because we had permission to protest (I KNOW, having to get permission to protest is bad enough). They then charged her with obstructing the highway. She is to appear in court next week. Will keep you posted.


A little later on, after the protest had dispersed, loads of Israeli supporters turned up with Israel flags. The remaining protestors started up again. Anika, who you can see HERE, and her sister were also arrested. Not sure what their status is at the moment. We managed to get them all solicitors immediately.


Ian, who is visiting from China, came along to add his voice to the support for Palestinians. His video will be uploaded soon. As will a great interview with Rabbi Elgahan Beck.

Attack on Ken Loach in Guardian [Monday 23-August]

I got sent this on facebook by the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Haven't yet been able to find the link in the Guardian-please link me if you do...

Tomorrow’s (Monday 23-August) Guardian is going to give space to the Director of the Melbourne International film Festival to attack Ken Loach for taking a stance on Palestine by withdrawing his current film from the Festival there (after it accepted Israeli Government money).

It will be a personal attack with NO mention of the Palestinian appeal for a cultural boycott or the reasons for that appeal.

**Please reply after reading the piece by posting a reply / writing a letter in support of Ken, who has been second to none - in his support for Palestinian human rights.

Excellent victory at SOAS general mtg-Israel IS an Apartheid state.

Yesterday's packed (although due to essay deadlines not quite as packed as usual) Union General meeting brought surprise victories for ALL the motions submitted. 

Interestingly, in the Make Apartheid History motion, someone proposed to take the 'resolves 3: 3) Affiliate our Union to the “Campaign for Academic Boycott of Israeli Institutions” carried out in the UK by BRICUP and by PACBI in Palestine.' to discuss seperately. 

Which we did and it still passed almost unanimously. So, what this means is that the person didn't want to have the academic boycott bit in the main motion but would have been in favour of the motion if that part was removed. It wasn't so now we have policy on the whole motion.

Motions included:

Comrades spoke confidently and passionately. We had hardly any opposition. There is a slight issue with the no Platform for Fascists motion which i am trying to deal with. Will keep you informed.

Candidates who are standing for election passed some very important motions. Katie Boothby was brilliant. Clearly our approach this year has brought people closer to us and we are now planning how to maximise on this.

Another Education is Possible is a great campaign that can bring together forces on the left to fight for a united position on the 5 key points:

Since the invasion of Gaza on December 27, 2008, resistance to Israeli aggression and U.S. complicity in Israel's wars crimes have spread.

Almost immediately, thousands took to the streets in Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, Venezuela and various cities throughout Europe and the United States. Now more than ever Israeli foreign policy has been exposed for what it really is: a campaign of terror and brutality, both required to maintain an unjust occupation of stolen land.

The movement to free Palestine took a massive step forward as students began occupying universities throughout Britain, demanding university divestment from Israel, humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza and the admittance of Palestinian students into their universities. Currently there are 22 occupations taking place in Britain alone.

While this was the first student occupation in the United States in response to the invasion of Gaza, it was not the only occupation in recent months. Last December, close to 100 student occupied the New School in New York City demanding the resignation of Bob Kerry, in addition to demanding more accountability amongst the administration with regard to investment and student voices. VICTORY AT LSE – WE ARE WINNING!

“Students from LSE have sent a powerful message. People will not sit idly by while Gaza burns. We will take direct action to break the link between Britain and Apartheid Israel.”

Students at LSE have ended their six day occupation after winning a substantial victory.

This includes:

1) Officially School-endorsed day of charity for MAP (Medical Aid for Palestine) co-sponsored by LSE SU Palestine Society
2) Old books and computers shipped to Gaza by LSE
3) Scholarships: Discussion with school to find suitable candidates for scholarships sponsored by 4) LSE-PSI and LSE SU PalSoc with an official school committee
5) Disinvestment: Representation on the committee of the Council discussing an ethical investment policy to make the case for divestment (presented by a school official to give it extra weight)
6) A personal statement from the director on Israel’s assault on Gaza
7) No victimisations of students involved in the occupation.

This is a fantastic victory and shows what occupations can achieve. The key to LSE's success was that they involved large numbers of students by having a constant rolling programme of meetings and lectures in the ‘liberated space’, plus going out and leafleting, petitioning and doing lecture shouts to build up support.

The Israeli army’s murderous assault on Gaza has been carried out with weapons made in Britain.

The British government licensed £24 million of British arms exports to Israel in the first half of last year – a £6 million increase on exports licensed during the whole of 2007.

Exports included components for combat aircraft, surface-to-air missiles, naval radars, electronic warfare equipment, weapon sights and military communications technology.

Human rights group Amnesty International recently highlighted evidence that engines for Israel’s unmanned military aircraft are being manufactured in Britain. United Nations agencies in Gaza have reported that these “drones” were used in the assault on the Palestinian population.

Britain’s Labour government also licences components for use in Apache combat helicopters and F-16 fighter planes, both of which are used by the Israeli army.

Britain also imports arms from Israel. The Campaign Against the Arms Trade notes that the government spends “millions of pounds each year on ‘battle-tested’ arms from Israeli companies, including 2,000 cluster shells that were used in Basra in 2003”.

Israel is one of the most militarised and highly armed states in the world. It has repeatedly committed atrocities against Palestinians.

Yet Gordon Brown has refused to issue any kind of serious arms

embargo on Israel. Instead he offers the services of the British navy to help stop the “smuggling” of arms to Palestinian resistance fighters.

We should fight to force Brown to break all diplomatic, military and commercial links with Israel – including the British arms trading that helps to fuel Israel’s terrorist war on the Palestinians.

Apparently, the West is feeding the fighters in Gaza

OMG, i have just read this vile report, Stop funding a Palestinian youth bulge, and the fighting will stop too. from The Wall St Journal- what a fricking cheek. "Journalist" Gunhar Heinsohn babbles:

"The reason for Gaza's endless youth bulge is that a large majority of its population does not have to provide for its offspring. Most babies are fed, clothed, vaccinated and educated by UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. "

and further:

"As long as we continue to subsidize Gaza's extreme demographic armament, young Palestinians will likely continue killing their brothers or neighbors."

So, what is he suggesting? Stop sending them food and aid? No wonder the IDF has been targeting UN aid ships and hospitals. The only way that the fighting will stop is if Israel ends the occupation of Palestinian land, frees the thousands of prisoner held without charge, stops bombing refugee camps, ends the seige of gaza, opens the border crosses and above all else respects the democratic choices of the palestinian people and their human rights...

Essex Occupation demands

JOIN THE OCCUPATION!SOLIDARITY WITH THE SUFFERING IN PALESTINE!

 

Since 6.30pm on Friday 16^th January, students at The University of Essex have taken control of the LTB, and are making demands to the University. Those demands are outlined below. Some of these demands have been met, such as a commitment from the University to send any surplus resources it may have to the University of Gaza, which was bombed to pieces by Israel. However, The University has not made enough commitments and the occupation has continued. We must continue until the University  ecognises the scale of the disaster in Palestine and takes a strong position in favour of humanity.  

Our Demands to the University:

 

 

1.        The University of Essex should release a statement condemning the Israeli attack on Gaza which has killed over 1000 people in the last 2 and a half weeks

 

2.        The University of Essex must provide 5 full scholarships to students from Palestine, beginning the next academic year. At a University with such a diverse student body, Palestinian students are hugely unrepresented when compared with other groups.

 

3.        The University of Essex administration should facilitate a 'fundraising day' where buckets will be in every lecture and seminar to collect money for the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians. [1]

 

4.        The University of Essex should help to rebuild the University of Gaza, which was bombed 6 times on the 28^th December 2008.[1] It should send any surplus books, computers or other resources as a way of helping the suffering students and staff in Gaza.

 

5.        Finally, any and every student involved in this campaign will not face victimisation or reprisals as a result of their work. Students have a right to protest and voice their opinions through peaceful means. A university should in fact encourage freedom of expression.
