Read SW report - Statement on Mumbai attacks

The unconscionable violence that Mumbai has experienced this last week has left many of us in shock and horror. We watch with increasing dread as politicians from India and Pakistan point fingers at each other, and the media in both countries dances to their tune.

But we refuse to sit back and watch our hard-earned progress towards peace be jeopardised by these events. As individual citizens of India and Pakistan we would like to reach out and set an example – that we stand together in our suffering, and are united in our condemnation of terror.

We are therefore organising a vigil at India House in Adlwych, London this Thursday (4th December) from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. The event will be a gathering of individuals who wish to express their grief and support to the families of all those who lost their lives in the attacks. The vigil will be strictly apolitical, so that those who attend may speak with their own voices.

Lighting a candle may be a small gesture, and it is. But it is an act premised on a sense of civility, compassion and human decency. We encourage all those who wish to lend their voices in support of the Mumbai victims and in condemnation of terrorism to attend, regardless of nationality or creed.
