2nd union lobby for sacked cleaner activist at UCL

uan Carlos Piedra Benitez has worked for Office and General, the cleaning contractors at University Colege London (UCL), for 11 months. Juan Carlos was transferred to work in UCL after being called into a disciplinary meeting and warned about his union activities, including campaigning for the London living wage.  He was told that his work was no problem and the only problem was his attitude—that he told people about the union, about their right to go to tribunals if they were badly treated.  Two days after being transferred to UCL he was called into a meeting and told that he had been seen at SOAS protesting against the immigration raid and at union protests. Then he was told "there is no job for you here"  and was made redundant.

See press article: http://www.socialistworker.org.uk/art.php?id=19042

Juan Carlos is demanding his reinstatement and that O&G be investigated.  He has the support of the UCL trade unions.  You can back his campaign in specific, practical ways.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1. Attend the public lobby on Thursday, bring banners etc:

Public lobby of the UCL Provost for Juan Carlos Piedra's reinstatement
1pm Thursday 1st October 2009
UCL Main Quad
(off Gower St, London WC1E 6BT)

2. Ask to add your name to the open letter (below) by emailing reinstatejuancarlos@yahoo.co.uk. Include your full name, trade union and any position you may hold and place of work or study as you wish these to appear in print. Signatures needed before midday Monday when th epetition will be presented.

3. Ask others to add their names. Workmates? Someone you handed a leaflet? Anyone with a bit of profile?  Union leaders, politicians, religious leaders, academics, journalists, people at the TUC conference happening in Liverpool in right now? Where else can you circulate this request?

4. Join the Facebook group at http://tinyurl.com/ramfy4 and invite others.

*** OPEN LETTER STARTS ***

Professor Malcolm Grant, Provost
UCL
Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT
Cc: Fernando Martins, manager, O&G offices at UCL

Dear Professor Grant,

We are appalled that cleaning contractor O&G have illegally created a false redundancy at UCL in order to dismiss union activist Juan Carlos Piedra, a member of Unite.

Juan Carlos was transferred to UCL on 24th August and two days later was called by his manager to a meeting at which he was told that his trade union activities (organising in the London Living Wage campaign at SOAS and other sites) had been recorded and would not be tolerated. He was then told that there was no job for him at UCL. He was given a letter on 9th September (which O&G had dated 2nd September) saying he was redundant from 17th September.

As trade unionists, students and living wage campaign supporters, we will not tolerate members of our campus communities being treated in this way and victimised for exercising their democratic right to engage in legal trade union activities.

O&G are one of the major contractors in the cleaning industry who are now bullying, harassing and victimising workers, many of whom are migrants, in order to break trade union organisation and keep wages at the lowest possible levels.

All workers, including those on low pay and migrants, have an equal right to organise. We demand that Juan Carlos be reinstated, and that O&G be investigated for violation of trade union rights at UCL.

Sincerely,

<YOUR NAME HERE>

Mutiny Scrutiny from the sauce blog

My own report coming soon...

From http//thesauce.org
The debut of Mutiny with Money on Trial at the Resistance Gallery has received high praise from far and wide - dubbed "the foundation of a whole new political model" by one audience member and trade unionist.

The event was a massive departure in political meetings and provided an evening of quick fire entertainment which was both engaging and enlightening. Pictures of the event by SOAS student Dougal Wallace can be found on Flickr.

A new format with a top table where everyone from the audience could join a panel of speakers to make contributions broke down the barrier between "expert politician" and spectating activist.

Films from Greenpeace, the Vestas occupation and the Detroit Techo Scene were interspersed with a poem titled Money from Victory MC, talks and discussion.

Ben Craggs, a PhD student at Goldsmiths College and union rep, said in a text: "Just wanted to say, tonight was really impressive. I slightly feared a student politics event.

"It actually felt like the foundation of a whole new political model... Not just a lefty talking shop but a viable alternative that is at once academically rigorous and activist - Congrats.

Majestic
Olivier and Pierre Wittorski, said via email: "I was just gonna say that it was awesome yesterday, we really enjoyed it.

"It s been a while that we were thinking about going to a political meeting like this and it was beyond what we were expecting: politic, art, music and talking to really cool people.

"It was absolutely brilliant so if you've got other interesting stuff to do, give us a shout (don't worry we will be looking at what is inside the little handed bag)."

Gareth Dale, a socialist and academic from South London said: "Well done for organising the Mutiny event; it was incredibly impressive.

"You got the mix of culture and politics spot on. And, for a first event, I was amazed at how many people came along. It was majestic."

The first session of the night, titled Money Changes Everything, became a heated debate between academics celebrating the breakdown of copyright with young inspiring artists wondering how they can make a living.

Vestas dominated the environment segment of the night with the premier of the latest film from Reel News capturing the excitement and political vibrancy of the occupation of the wind generator factory workers fighting redundancy through occupation.

Stencil
The Marxist economist Professor Costas Lapavitsas expounded on the greed of the bankers and weakness of the Government exposed by the credit crunch claiming "the markets do not work".

The Resistance Gallery was clad with nautical ropes adding to the Mutiny theme and also clad with beautiful, retro artifacts from old televisions to blood spattered walls.

Art collections, including contributions from the stencil artist Arofish and the superb photography of Anna Logophobia also added to a genuinely avant-garde atmosphere.

The next event, Violence on Trial is being held on Thursday, November 26, again at the Resistance Gallery in Bethnal Green. To get involved - organising, blogging, submitting art, speaking, showing a film etc - visit the website at jointhemutiny.org.

(Declaration of interest: the Sauce has been involved with Mutiny since its inception).

Bectu Union supports members refusing to work if/when BNP are on Question Time

free speech? why Nazi Nick Griffin should not be allowed on question time and protest date

Dear Everyone

Unite Against Fascism is not the only organisation which believes that the Nazis should not be allowed to appear on the BBCs flagship political discussion programme, Question time. The TV technicians' union has attacked the BBC's decision to invite BNP leader Nick Griffin on to Question Time and pledged to join a demonstration against the recording of the programme.

THE PROTEST WILL BE ON 22ND OCTOBER LATE AFTERNOON IN LONDON—DETAILS TO BE ANNOUNCED BUT BOOK TIME OFF NOW TO COME ALONG IF YOU CAN GET TO LONDON

Bectu said it would support any of its members who refused to work on the programme, which will be transmitted on October 22.General secretary Gerry Morrissey said: "We believe there should be no media coverage of the BNP and I have raised this issue with the director general, Mark Thompson.

"He said they have been invited on to the programme because they have won elections, but we strongly disagree.

"We will be arranging a demonstration and lobby outside the Question Time studios and we will be working with anti-fascist groups to ensure there is a significant turn out."

We know that it sounds bad to say we want to stop the views of someone from being aired--but you have to ask yourself are Nazis the same as others with whom you disagree? And the answer is no. they are not just people with offensive views. They are Nazis. And Nazis engage in mass murder when they get power. They also shut down every kind of democratic organisation in civil society.

The argument that they must be allowed to be on TV to expose them is mistaken for two reasons

Firstly: it is not necessary to have Hitler to speak in order to expose his views. Therefore it is not necessary for Nick Griffin and the Nazi BNP to be given air time on the state TV to expose them. We already know they are racist and fascist

Secondly: like Hitler, Griffin intends to use the platforms afforded in a democratic society to hide his true nature until it is too late. He won't be exposed on the BBC. He will wear a suit and lie. he will use parliament and the BBC and legal methods , distancing himself from the thugs who commit racist attacks up to the point when he feels strong enough, as Hitler did, to smash all of that and emerge as a dictator.

By then it will be too late.

Even now, when Nazis speak people die because the thugs gain confidence. Racist attacks increased when the BNP organised in east London and had their bookshop in south London. Stephen Lawrence died during a spate of racist attacks and he died not far from the BNP bookshop--his alleged killers later being found to read the BNP paper. David Copeland the nail bomber in London was a BNP security force member.

So.. nazis alone should not be given a platform--the muder of 6 million jews is not a matter for polite debate. if you wouldnt tolerate Hitler on the beeb.. LETS STOP NAZI NICK from getting the space to organise murder

Teach your children about Trade Unions

From LabourStart:

It's never too soon to start teaching your kids about trade unions — and one good way to do so is through children's books that cast unions in a positive light.  There aren't a lot of these, which is why we're delighted to have come across a new historical novel by Mary Cronk Farrell, "Fire in the Hole".  It's suitable for readers aged 8 and above and I encourage all LabourStart readers to purchase copies for your own kids.  To learn more about this book and to order your copies, click here:

The Great Climate Swoop - UPDATE 1 - 3 weeks to go!

Begin forwarded message:

From: info@climatecamp.org.uk
Date: 27 September 2009 13:15:28 GMT+01:00
To: climatecamp@lists.riseup.net
Subject: [climatecamp] The Great Climate Swoop - UPDATE 1 - 3 weeks to go!

Hi ho!

Yesterday, 1,500 people took mass climate action in Denmark to shut down a
coal fired power station. 100 were arrested inside - see
http://modkraft.dk/spip.php?article11552.  A few weeks ago in Australia a
similar event was organised at Hazelwood power station to great effect -
see http://www.switchoffhazelwood.org. In three weeks time, it's our turn!

Earlier this year we decided to separate our mass action from this
summer's Camp for Climate Action in order to focus on movement building...
this was a great success and the Blackheath camp has introduced 100s if
not 1000s more to climate camp and direct action.

Now it's time for us to build on this success and get active once again...
and what better target than Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal fired power station in
Nottingham?

OLD KING COAL WONT FALL EASILY

Just like the summer camp, this won't happen without us pulling out all
the stops, taking a deep breath and running headlong into the next
challenge.  With just 3 weeks to go, October 17th/18th is our opportunity
to do just that.

Actions speak louder than words.. so... What are you going to do on the
Great Climate Swoop?

In this update:

1) PRE-SWOOP LOCAL EVENTS
2) TRANSPORT
3) WHAT TO BRING
4) PUBLICITY IS FOR EVERYONE
5) LEEDS GATHERING
6) QUESTIONS?

*****************************************************************

4.  Publicity is for everyone
-------------------------
It sounds obvious, but the best way to shut down the power station is to
get lots of people to come, and the best way to get lots of people to come
is for all of us to tell everyone we know about it!

For copies of the postcard, email info@thegreatclimateswoop.org

Wow -- look at what this movement looks like

Wow. Monday's Wake Up call was unbelievable - 2632 events in 134 countries, tens of thousands of phone calls crashing government lines, unbelievable creativity and diversity of events, directly reaching heads of state and cabinet ministers from Australia to Europe. Words can't describe it, this video gets close:

Click here to watch this incredible video!
Click here to watch the video.

The Wake Up call was covered by hundreds of major news outlets and made the evening news everywhere from Germany to New Zealand. Europe's environment chief praised "the mobilisation of so many people by Avaaz.org", and the Spanish environment minister called the action "extraordinary". After a deluge of votes and phone-calls from the UK, Prime Minister Gordon Brown became the first major world leader to agree to our demand to go to Copenhagen, taking a phone-call personally and saying that with "the pressure that can brought by organizations like yours...what people think is impossible can become possible".

World leaders have heard us. But as Tuesday's UN summit showed, one day of action won't be enough to get real progress on climate. We need to come back again and again, louder and louder, until we get a fair, ambitious and binding climate treaty.

We'll keep the pressure high through the TCKTCKTCK campaign until Copenhagen, with another global day of action on October 24th, and start planning right now for the LARGEST CLIMATE MOBILIZATION IN HISTORY ON DECEMBER 12th, in the final days of the Copenhagen negotiations.

Avaaz is now 3.6 million members strong in 14 languages, in every country of the world. On Monday, our movement took a huge step forward -- we showed that we can not only send millions of messages to leaders or donate millions to worthy causes, but that in just a few days we can flood the streets and crash phone lines from Mexico City to Mumbai.

If we stick together, anything is possible.

With hope and excitement for the future,

Ricken, Ben, Paul, Milena, Alice, Luis, Brett, Taren, Margaret, Iain, Pascal, Graziela, Paula, Benjamin, Rajeev, Veronique, Raluca, Julius, Yuri, Saravanan, Vladimir, Tihomir, Sam, Emma and the whole Avaaz team

PS - the video above was made from over 10,000 wake up call pictures and 600 videos uploaded to Avaaz in just 24 hours! There were many tears among people making the video as we saw the amazing dedication of everyone, from the Avaaz community to our TCKTCKTCK campaign partners to people joining the first climate action of their lives. Click here to see the video of this amazing worldwide movement in action: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sept21_hub

Eurostar-Now that we have your attention ...

Got this great email from LabourStart, the International Trade Union website. I covered these Eurostar strikes last year but didn't realise they   were on again so hurrah for online campaigns. Will go down to the next one in Euston and keep u updated.

Thanks LabourStart. Good luck Eurostar campaigners.

Sometimes when we do one of our online campaigns, we trigger a response from the employer or government.  Often just getting that response is a kind of victory -- it means we've gotten their attention, at the very least.

It usually takes a few hundred messages, or even a few thousand, before this happens.

But yesterday we were asked by a British union, the RMT, to do an online campaign in support of the under-paid, poorly-treated workers who clean the world-famous Eurostar trains that connect London to the European continent.

As usual, I sent off the first message myself.  And an hour later, I had an answer in my inbox from the company defending its position.

That's right -- one email message from one person got their attention.

Imagine what will happen when they have 10,000 such messages flooding into their inbox!

Please send off your message right now -- click here:

http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=575

The Eurostar cleaners had a rock-solid 48-hour strike last week.  This online campaign is the next stage of their fight for dignity.

Let's take advantage of the fact that the company seems a bit sensitive to criticism and hit them with a tremendous number of email messages quickly over the next 24 hours.

After you've sent off your own message to Eurostar, please pass this email message on your friends and co-workers.

Thanks.

The Love Music Hate Racism Appeal

WRITTEN BY LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM    FRIDAY, 18 SEPTEMBER 2009 12:10
Love Music Hate Racism Appeal

LMHR are appealing for one-off donations or a small monthly sum to help continue their vital work.

The election of the first-ever fascist representatives to a major parliament from Britain following the European Elections has sent a shock wave through our society. Almost one million people in the UK voted for an openly racist party, which bans non-whites from membership, has called for an "all-white Britain", and whose leaderNick Griffin has been convicted of Holocaust denial. A racist and fascist political party, the British National Party, has recorded record levels of electoral success for a fascist party in Britain – with two MEPs and almost 60 local councillors.

Since 2002 we've staged six major outdoor festivals, and there have been more than 700 LMHR events across every part of the country to date – most of them organised locally by volunteers.

There were more LMHR events in May 2009 – over 20 – than in any single month since the campaign began in 2002. These included anAsian Dub Foundation tour, and a magnificent 2,500-strong multi-venue LMHR festival in Derby. In addition:

- A viral LMHR TV ad was produced by Ridley Scott Films and Leo Burnett ad agency, which received thousands of hits and will continue to be used throughout the year with pans for screenings in cinemas and on music television. Check out the video now by clicking this LINK

- Scores of LMHR-supporting bands reminded their fans – by email,FacebookMyspace and Twitter – to go out and use their vote.
Facebook LINK
Myspace LINK
Twitter LINK

- We staged a festival in Stoke (the BNP's 'Jewel In The Crown') where artists such as Kelley Rowland, Pete Doherty, Reverend & The Makers and VV Brown (among others) entertained 20,000 people from across the country who came together to celebrate diversity. Watch the interview Pete Doherty gave us at Stoke by clicking this LINK

- We recently returned from Sziget Festival in Budapest (Europe's biggest - 350,000+) where 60,000 people from across Europe came together to watch the Love Music Hate Racism All-stars (comprising members of Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly, Babyshambles, Sham 69, Bashy, Mpho Skeef, Kid British, King Blues) perform in support of ZARE - the newly-formed Hungarian LMHR equivalent. Watch the Allstars perform the Specials classic GHOST TOWN and their version of AC/DC's BACK IN BLACK
Ghost Town Link
Back In Black Link

- We have been invited to have a presence at many festivals over the summer, spreading the message, handing out leaflets and engaging with music fans on a direct one-to-one basis, these festivals includedStandon Calling, Field Day, Underage Festival, 1234 Festival, Zimfest, Summer Sundaize, Ireland's Electric Picnic, Leicester'sBelgrava Mela, Hull's Freedom FestivalOne Love Festival plus an UNTOLD number of gigs and music events. Check out Messages of support from the likes of Little Boots, Hadouken, LoveFoxxx, Metronomy, The Big Pink, The Invisible, Tim Burgess, The Rakesand many, many more - click the LINK

We are a proudly independent non-party-political campaign. We are deliberately not a registered charity, since we want to retain the freedom to call the BNP exactly what they are – Racists and fascists. This coming year we intend to further raise awareness of the necessity of people to use their votes. We intend to hold several large scale events between now and May - when we predict the next General Election will be held. It's vital we increase our campaign and stop the BNP gaining further power by default. We want to show that every vote can count and can help stop racism and division within our society. LMHR manages to punch above our weight with regards to profile, we appear a massive operation with the events we've pulled off, unfortunately this is not the case: we are not a large organisation at all – we have only a small handful of full-time workers, and after that we are entirely volunteer run.

Our only income comes from donations and fundraisers held by local groups across the country.

We are asking if you, your organisation, your company, your band would consider making a financial contribution to help the Love Music Hate Racism campaign to be an even bigger force for celebrating our multicultural society and inspiring people across the country to actively oppose racism and fascism.

a one-off donation, or a small sum each month will go DIRECTLY into our campaigning work: our website, t-shirts, badges, posters and leaflets, mailouts, and so on… everything that goes into sustaining a network of music fans and anti-racists. For instance this year we need a total redesign of our website, and we'd like to reach out to new and existing supporters online and through social networking in a more effective way.

If you are able to donate, you can copy and paste this link into your browser which will take you to the secure donation page;

http://bit.ly/fvwu9

alternatively you can make cheques payable to "Love Music Hate Racism" and send to LMHR, 1st Floor, 231 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London, SW1V 1EH. Or if you wish you can email us atinfo@lovemusichateracism.com , or call the office on 020 7801 2781 to discuss other ways to donate to or get involved with the cause.

Another possibility is donating your time or your skills - we are constantly on the lookout for volunteers, graphic designers, programmers, artists, photographers, writers, campaignersEVERYONE can help in some way, and it is the donations and help provided to us from YOU that keeps the campaign strong and vibrant, and such a force for positivity, tolerance and good.

Yours Sincerely,

The Love Music Hate Racism Team
