Fighting Fascism, and the case for No Platform -TMRW 22 April

I'm speaking at this very important mtg tmrw to defend Bell, to defend No Platform and to defend our students' unions from fascists.

Please do come along and show your support.
#uaf #bnp #edl #nusnc10

Thursday 22nd April, 6pm - 8pm

ULU, Malet Street

Room - 3A (third floor)

Nearest Tubes - Goodge St, Euston, Euston Sq & Russell Sq
This meeting has been called by UAF, the NUS Black Students’ Campaign and the NUS LGBT Campaign only two weeks away from the General Election on Thursday May 6th. Following the election of two British National Party fascist MEPs last June it is more important than ever that we as a student movement come together and oppose the rise of fascism within the UK.
The meeting is being held exactly one week after the censure of Bell Ribeiro-Addy at NUS National Conference for sending a letter to Durham Students’ Union. The censure was made on the grounds that Bell was “threatening” and imposing NUS’ No Platform on Durham. The reality was that Bell and Daf Adley (NUS LGBT Officer) successfully stopped two fascists (including ex-National Front leader Andrew Brons) spreading their racist lies on Durham campus.
This meeting will discuss the ways in which students can mobilise to stop the BNP and other groups like the English Defence League, and look at how No Platform for Fascists can be a very useful tool within Students’ Unions.
Book your place now – email bell@nus.org.uk and daf.adley@nus.org.uk

Speakers

Chair - Sabby Dhalu, UAF Joint Secretary

Hugh Lanning, PCS Deputy General Secretary

Bell Ribeiro-Addy, NUS Black Students' Officer

Daf Adley, NUS LGBT Officer (Open Place)

Clare Solomon, ULU President-elect

DAY OF ACTION AGAINST THE NAZI BNP IN BARKING AND DAGENHAM: SUNDAY 25th APRIL

Meet 11am at Jazzie Jake Caribbean Restaurant, 8-10 North Street, Barking IG11 8AW (nearest station: Barking)

The national and local elections are drawing ever nearer.  Recently, the council candidates for Barking & Dagenham were announced - despite what the BNP had previously threatened, they have not got enough support to stand a full slate in the borough.  They have only managed to find 34 individuals willing to stand for them - but this is still just enough to win the council.  Come and join us this Sunday as we step up the campaign to make sure these Nazis don't take Barking & Dagenham over.
We will be canvassing and leafleting, and there will be lunch provided as well as live music and entertainment provided by Love Music Hate Racism.

Our canvassing returns so far show that the vast majority (over 60%) are against the BNP and will not vote for them either in the national or local elections - however only a very small proportion of voters say they've made up their minds on which way to vote.  UAF and our supporters can play a huge role in motivating those who are against the BNP to go out on election day and use their to keep the BNP out.

Please circulate information about this Day of Action amongst your work mates, friends and family.  Make sure you use this opportunity to stop the Nazi BNP in their tracks.

Leninism in the 21st century-welcome to Counterfire

Well, now the lack of stuff on this blog is explained...we have all been busy beavering away behind the scenes with a brand new project. More details on how to get involved on the front page-sign up for our weekly bulletin which will provide details of how to register for the sight, how to send in articles, videos, photo's etc.

We look forward to working with you in this brand new way.

I shamelessly copied the blurb from our news editor's blog The Sauce because, in true internet fashion, we operate on a creative commons licence :-) Thanks Brendan!

News and theory publication Counterfire was launched today with a plethora of reports and essays focusing on the crisis in capitalism, imperialism and war and popular culture.

The website is being launched on International Women's Day with a 60 strong team including an investigations team, an industrial unit, arts reviews and peer reviewed publications.

Lindsey German, author of Material Girls, Women, Sex and Work and convenor of Stop the War said: “We live in a world of growing conflict, crisis and inequality and Counterfire is a much needed new voice calling for fundamental change.”

Adrian Cousins, editor of the new site, said: “Counterfire includes snappy news articles alongside expert analysis of the most important issues today with original design, photography and video. There is a blog aggregate so those interested in the movements know where to come.”

John Rees, broadcaster and author, said: “The journalism and analysis on Counterfire will provide a welcome alternative to the discredited and failing policies of the political elite.”

Elly Badcock, women's officer at SOAS and women's editor, said: “It's fantastic that on the 100th International Women's Day this powerful new site which uses the latest technology is providing a platform for the new feminism of the 21st Century.”

The site features daily news from the movements including articles on protests, petitions and campaigns alongside theory analysing the economy, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and campaigns against the BNP and the English Defence League.

The site is available at counterfire.org with news being fed through twitter at www.twitter.com/counterfire with a video feed at youtube.com/counterfire. Articles on the site can be reproduced with permission and attribution.

Launch articles on the site include:

The Feminist Manifesto for the 21st Century, with video from Saturday's packed meeting at Housmans bookshop by Lindsey German and Nina Power

Boycott fascist pub in Camden week of action 25th-29th Jan 2009 update

The Gloucester Arms on Leighton Road in Kentish Town has been subjected to protests by anti racists following the landlord, John Coyne's decision to let organised racists hold meetings in the pub. There will be a week of email and telephone action on the week of 25th - 29th Jan asking that Camden council remove the pub's licence especially as they play hardore porn in front of kids.
The far right group Jobbik Party, part of a racist group "The Alliance of Nationalist Movements" drafted by the BNPs Nick Griffin, have been holding meetings in the pub. The pub's walls were recently daubed with Close BNP Pub and local people are sick of the loud music being played at full volume all night and hardcore porn dvds being played in front of children in the bar.
During protests held by Camden Anarchists and covered by the Camden New Journal the lanflord John Coyne came out and told them to "go whistle" before allowing the meeting to go ahead. The landlord is believed to have links to racist right wing groups formed in Ulster.

Contact Camden Council and ask that they remove the pub's license.

How many cops in the BNP?

I had this video entitled 'How many cops in the BBC?' originally-woops. Mind you, we could ask that question too no? I wondered why no one could find it so here it is again with corrected title...better late than never.

This video was filmed at the National Stop the War demo at which two or three shit heads (racists, fascists?) turned up and hurled abuse at Tony Benn calling him unpatriotic and worse (although I didnt hear exactly what was said other than the 'unpatriotic' coz I was a bit to far away to catch it. They refused to move so we chased them away. And, only a couple of days after the BNP leader appeared on Question Time these (and I think I am correct in saying theya re far right racists at least becasue they refused to deny it) they had the damn cheek, and confidence to come to an anti-war a demo of TENS OF THOUSANDS on their own and scream shit at us.

Anyway, this is why we ned to continue our No Platform position. Don't give these people a platform to legitimise thier fascist views.

(Why is my blog not allowing spaces between my paragraphs?)

Bectu Union supports members refusing to work if/when BNP are on Question Time

free speech? why Nazi Nick Griffin should not be allowed on question time and protest date

Dear Everyone

Unite Against Fascism is not the only organisation which believes that the Nazis should not be allowed to appear on the BBCs flagship political discussion programme, Question time. The TV technicians' union has attacked the BBC's decision to invite BNP leader Nick Griffin on to Question Time and pledged to join a demonstration against the recording of the programme.

THE PROTEST WILL BE ON 22ND OCTOBER LATE AFTERNOON IN LONDON—DETAILS TO BE ANNOUNCED BUT BOOK TIME OFF NOW TO COME ALONG IF YOU CAN GET TO LONDON

Bectu said it would support any of its members who refused to work on the programme, which will be transmitted on October 22.General secretary Gerry Morrissey said: "We believe there should be no media coverage of the BNP and I have raised this issue with the director general, Mark Thompson.

"He said they have been invited on to the programme because they have won elections, but we strongly disagree.

"We will be arranging a demonstration and lobby outside the Question Time studios and we will be working with anti-fascist groups to ensure there is a significant turn out."

We know that it sounds bad to say we want to stop the views of someone from being aired--but you have to ask yourself are Nazis the same as others with whom you disagree? And the answer is no. they are not just people with offensive views. They are Nazis. And Nazis engage in mass murder when they get power. They also shut down every kind of democratic organisation in civil society.

The argument that they must be allowed to be on TV to expose them is mistaken for two reasons

Firstly: it is not necessary to have Hitler to speak in order to expose his views. Therefore it is not necessary for Nick Griffin and the Nazi BNP to be given air time on the state TV to expose them. We already know they are racist and fascist

Secondly: like Hitler, Griffin intends to use the platforms afforded in a democratic society to hide his true nature until it is too late. He won't be exposed on the BBC. He will wear a suit and lie. he will use parliament and the BBC and legal methods , distancing himself from the thugs who commit racist attacks up to the point when he feels strong enough, as Hitler did, to smash all of that and emerge as a dictator.

By then it will be too late.

Even now, when Nazis speak people die because the thugs gain confidence. Racist attacks increased when the BNP organised in east London and had their bookshop in south London. Stephen Lawrence died during a spate of racist attacks and he died not far from the BNP bookshop--his alleged killers later being found to read the BNP paper. David Copeland the nail bomber in London was a BNP security force member.

So.. nazis alone should not be given a platform--the muder of 6 million jews is not a matter for polite debate. if you wouldnt tolerate Hitler on the beeb.. LETS STOP NAZI NICK from getting the space to organise murder

Throw eggs at griffin game. Eggsellent shot comrades.

I'm a bit slow on this story but...

On tuesday BRITISH National Party leader Nick Griffin was forced to abandon a press conference outside Parliament when demonstrators pelted him with eggs ( A SOAS .

Chanting “Off our streets, Nazi scum”, two hundred activists chased him down the street as his bodyguards bundled him into a car.

We built this demonstration primarily through twitter and texts. The info reached a T&G Union meeting in the area who promptly concelled the meeting and joined the protest.

We all met at the tube because it is illegal to demonstrate or even gather outside the houses of parliament without prior warning.  Covering up our Love Music Hate Racism T-shirts and hiding our placards, along with all the trade union officials in suits, we did not look like a usual demonstration.  We walked slowly and quietly towards the press conference to not arouse suspicion and decended upon them.

When we got close we ripped open our jackets to reveal our anti-fascism t-shirts, shoved our banners in the air and walked towards him chanting 'Nazi scum, off our streets'.

He was clearly taken by surprise, not least when a SOAS student landed an egg directly on his face (fucking brilliant to watch!).

the support from passers by was amazing. All the passengers in the open window big yellow duck bus/boat cheered loudly out the window as we chased him up the street.

Nick Griffins nasty thug security lashed out true to form smashing one woman protester squarely in the face.

He responded to our protest by calling us a bunch of 'lazy students, lecturers and parisitic trade union hardcore labour supporters'!!!

I received a message from someone who said 'I understand he was only pissed off because you didn't separate the whites first.' Another eggstremely eggsellent comment Peter!

Beats Beat Bullets and also beat the Nazi's

Last night i was disgusted to hear Nick Griffin, leader of the fascist BNP talk about war as if he was in favour of withdrawing the troops. He is an avid holocaust denier and would prefer to see all Jews living in Israel.

How dare the Fascist BNP claim they are anti-war when they declare war on everyone they don't agree with. (Read Stop the War coalitions release HERE)

How dare he say that the 'BNP has no problem with people who contribute to society wherever they were born' and then continue to say that they are 'a white only party because someone has to stand up for the indigenous people'

How dare he say that 'the rivers of truth are flowing once again' continually saying that the 'dams on truth' are breaking. The Fascist Enoch Powell will be cheering him on from his grave.

Yesterday the BNP were given close to £1 million and those that haven't voted have allowed them to meet the euro extreme far right.

Come to Beats Beat Bullets to send a loud message that Fascists are NOT anti-war, they are not welcome here. They should go back to where they come from.

Protest against Channel 4 giving platform to convicted Holocaust denier - Tuesday 9th Dec

Channel 4's offshoot channel More 4 is planning to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by giving a platform to the Nazi sympathiser and convicted Holocaust denier David Irving.

Irving has spent his entire miserable career peddling apologetics for Hitler in far right and fascist circles.

To present him as a hero of "free speech" is a grotesque travesty – his entire life has been dedicated to those who would crush all human freedoms.

More 4 plans to show its 90 minute documentary, An Independent Mind, on Tuesday night. But we can stop them if enough people register their anger and disgust.

Call 0845 076 0191 to complain to Channel 4 and demand that they stop handing over airtime to Nazis and Holocaust deniers.

Unite Against Fascism has called two protests over More 4's Irving documentary, this evening and tomorrow evening.

The Royal Society of Arts is screening the documentary tonight, Monday 8 December. To protest assemble at 6pm outside 8 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6EZ (Covent Garden tube)

UAF has also called a protest outside Channel 4's headquarters on Tuesday 9 December. Assemble at 6pm outside 124 Horseferry Rd, London SW1 (nearest tube St James's Park).

Seize this opportunity to send the Nazi BNP packing

The leak of the membership list for the fascist British National Party (BNP) is an opportunity for trade unionists and anti-fascists to drive home a blow against Britain’s largest Nazi organisation.

The BNP membership list, dating from late last year, was posted online last night. BNP leader Nick Griffin admitted today that the leak came from inside the organisation. A disgruntled former senior BNP employee was to blame, he said.

The fascists are in no position to complain about their privacy being invaded. They have long used hate sites such as “Red Watch” to publish personal information about anti-Nazi activists. Now they are turning these same tactics on themselves.

Seize this opportunity to send the Nazi BNP packing

Last night I spent hours scouring the lists. I am pleased that there is only one, in my area, one in my previous are and two registered nazi's in Camden where we have been campaigning recently. In Camden where they stood two months ago they only got 29 votes so well done to Camden UAF and all those that campaigned together. United we stand.

Have a look at the lists yourself. There are many links on facebook and on the net. You will be shocked (or not) by how many ex-military and police officers on it. to search, for those of you who are not familiar with Excel, click tools then sort and sort in various ways. Columns J & K are where you can see the occupations. Then hold Ctrl and press 'f'. you can then search by keywords such as 'renew' or 'military' or 'police' fro example and the keep pressing 'next' for the next entry. Fascinating stuff.

In cases where people haven't renewed their memberships, you can also see why-some very illuminating evidence: 'under police investigation' is one of the entries!!

Read the report at Socialist Worker here.

Shame on Prof. Hugh Collins Head of Law at LSE

He was quoted as saying it would be 'clearly unfair' for BNP members to be sacked 'just for being a member of a political party'.

From today's Metro:

"Prof Hugh Collins, head of law at the London School of Economic and Political Science, agreed that sacked BNP members could sue for unfair dismissal.

'There is a freedom of association right which is supposed to protect people's rights to join political parties.

'For most workers I would have thought it would be clearly unfair to be dismissed just for being a member of a political party,' Prof Collins said."
