MET CHIEF WARNED "RIOT COPS WILL KILL" BEFORE TOMLINSON

BRITAIN'S most senior policeman, Sir Paul Stephenson, was warned in writing that police violence would lead to “serious injuries or even deaths” just three weeks before Ian Tomlinson was pushed to the ground and killed by an officer.

The Met Police commissioner was warned by senior organisers from the Stop the War Coalition that riot officers were so out of hand they were putting the lives of "at serious risk" in a formal letter - backed up by a dossier of evidence.

New York school occupation-watch the police brutality.

At approximately 6am yesterday, Friday April 10th, students re-occupied the Graduate Faculty building at the New School in New York City. Students were able to occupy the entire building this time, holding it for nearly five hours. The building was surrounded by 100+ police from every division of the city, plus dozens more undercover and black suv ops, horse police and police helicopters.

Police used pepper spray and mace while forcibly arresting students, and several students were assaulted by NYPD. So far 19 students have been arrested, and are currently in jail in Manhattan's 6th Precinct at 100 Center Street in Chinatown. There is a solidarity rally being held at 10pm tonight in Union Square in Manhattan for anyone in the city to come and show your support! SOAS ACADEMICS DEFEND MASH JOY

Dear Mash,

It has been good to make your acquaintance, though I deeply regret the circumstances. Thank you for your kind words, but the situation in which you found yourself should never have happened. It was dereliction of the School’s duty of care towards you that you were intimidated like this on SOAS property.

Thank you for showing such restraint in the face of unwarranted provocation, and such courage in raising this issue publicly.

I shall forward an email that I sent to all UCU(Lecturer Union) members yesterday evening that has engendered a flood of emails from academics expressing shock at your treatment.

Your measured account chills me, particularly your statement that “you could tell by the way that the police kept staring at me that they did not consider this matter over”.

It is such a restrained account of appalling intimidation that all academics and senior admin staff in the School cannot fail to be utterly shocked at what has been allowed to happen to you on the SOAS campus.

I assure that SOAS UCU will not cease until the Director has addressed this issue, I will be raising it at a number of SOAS Committees on which I sit. UCU and I, personally, will be writing to the Met to complain of the appalling treatment you received at the hands of these policemen.

I apologise unreservedly for this outrageous behaviour towards you and the School’s failure to protect you.

You have absolutely nothing to feel ashamed of.

You dealt with these institutional bullies (police) with calm and restraint in the face of obvious provocation. Four burly policemen arrived at SOAS in relation to just one student. They arrived in a car with a police van in tow. They obviously intended to use it. Angered at failing to find the student who’d dared to exercise his right to “freedom of speech”, they were obviously trying to provoke an incident with you.

You dealt with it brilliantly, and were brave enough to put forward a motion at the Students’ Union AGM yesterday that was supported unanimously. That is the action of a brave man.

Many academics have been talking about your situation and have expressed shock that you have been exposed to this treatment.

You are the catalyst that will bring about change. That is something of which you can be enormously proud.

Noha alerted me to this video, which was uploaded around a year ago to YouTube, but hadn’t caught our attention…

You can see at least one uniformed police soldier, and hear talk in Egyptian colloquial about ma7ader, etc… Though the channel user titled it as “prisons in Egypt,” I think it’s likely to have been shot in a police station..

I couldn’t help but remembering similar scenes one watches on TV, but in Iraq, Palestine or Afghanistan. There’s no difference between Mubarak’s police and the US occupation troops..

Circulate the video ya shabab, and let’s try to get any more info about it…

The video was released the day after the TUC in Brighton condemned the erosion of civil liberties and media freedoms in Britain. TUC unions unanimously backed a motion, proposed by the National Union of Journalists, which called for a rethink of government policies that put journalists at risk of imprisonment just for doing their job.

The ban on the demonstration down Whitehall to protest the visit of war criminal George Bush was enforced with violence by the Metropolitan police. My best friend Suzanna Wylie "sustained a bloody head wound in the melee" according to the Guardian paper. "I'm angry that the police have treated us like we are rioting, and we're not," she said. "I've been on lots of demonstrations before, and every one of the Stop the War demonstrations have been peaceful; this time because Bush is here, because of his own security arrangements, they won't let us demonstrate. "If they let us demonstrate, there would have been none of this." Stop the War Coalition, one of the organisers, added that "this was very predictable. If they had allowed us to deliver our letters of protest to Downing Street, as we had asked, none of this would have happened." Two protestors were hospitalised by baton weilding police. Stop the War Coalition have organised over 20 national protests all of which have been peaceful. We have written a letter of protest to the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith. GeorgeGalloway MP, a vice president of the Stop the War Coalition, has also written a letter of protest to the Commissioner of Police, Sir Ian Blair. Images of the demo can be found here and here. Police Brutality Two protestors were hospitalised after police batoned those who approached the security fence around the protest free 'green zone'. The image below shows one hospitalised protestor being pulled towards the police before being struck on the head and back. Civil liberties another casualty of war Prominent supporters of Stop the War Coalition condemned police violence. Human rights campaigner Bianca Jagger said, “Our civil liberties are becoming another casualty of the ‘war on terror’. I was born in a dictatorship and look with great concern at recent erosions of our liberties. At the demonstration today all I wanted to do with others was to peacefully deliver my letter to the Prime Minister. I was prevented from doing so and instead witnessed brutality towards the demonstrators.” Andrew Murray, Chair of StWC, said, “We condemn the decision of the British government and police to deny the British public the right to peacefully demonstrate while acting on behalf of the criminal administration in the USA. We also denounce the brutal conduct of many police officers towards demonstrators in Whitehall.
