Ken Loach, director of the film Looking For Eric, message of support for SOAS cleaners

Ken Loach, director of the film Looking For Eric, stated:

"This raid is the action of a bully. Migrant workers are amongst the most vulnerable - poorly paid and far from home. Recent action by Unison to secure better wages and conditions at SOAS was good news. Now we wonder if the SOAS cleaners are being targeted because they dared to organise as trade unionists. We should all stand with them in solidarity in the face of this victimisation."

Please add more messages of support to the bottom of this post. Or email me.

I will collect them and pass them on.

Raids like these are more typical of the kinds of military regimes that have marked the histories of the countries from which many of the SOAS cleaners come from. The international academic community will be surprised to hear that such tactics should be employed in allegedly liberal UK universities. How is it possible that Police was allowed onto the university’s premises? This racist and anti-trade union action threatens not only the migrant workers keeping the universities clean, it is also a threat to the university community as a whole and much of its main activities. Who’s next in line? Solidarity with the SOAS migrant workers! Release the detainees immediately!
